Don’t be surprised by the name ‘Little’ Andaman. It is the fourth largest inhabited island of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. Located some 120 km from Port Blair, Little Andaman island has been open to tourism, but its remote location makes it one of the offbeat places to explore in Andaman. This place is ideal for those who look for tourist-free hidden gems where one expects the least commercialisation.

If you ever plan to visit this island, you will be greeted with an amazing view of rainforest, empty, but clean and pristine beaches. Don’t forget to visit the gushing waterfalls and palm oil plantations.

One should also note that some part of the island like Dugong Creek in the North and South Bay area which is a tribal protected area is reserved for the Onge community. Common tourists are not allowed to visit. The same goes for the Nicobarese settlement which is strictly out of reach for the visitors (for their safety as well as safety of the tribals).

The best time to visit Little Andaman is between November and April when the weather is pleasant and ideal for outdoor activities like surfing, snorkelling, and swimming. It is also a perfect time to tie a hammock and relax on the beach.

How to Reach Little Andaman

By Ferry: The easiest way to reach Little Andaman is to board a government ferry from Phoenix Bay and Haddo Wharf in Port Blair. The journey takes about 6 hours to 8 hours, which is based on weather and sea conditions. Those who want to visit Little Andaman should ideally book their ferry tickets at least two days prior.

By Helicopter: The alternative but pricier way to reach Little Andaman is to take a chopper ride from Port Blair. Pawan Hans has been providing inter-island helicopter services in Andaman since June 2003. Using a helicopter is the quickest way to reach your destination, however they are subject to availability.

1. Butler Bay Beach

Tourists get fascinated by the pristine and clean beauty of this beach. You will find white sand sparkling under sunlight and shimmering turquoise waters lapping up the coastline. The two main activities to do on Butler Bay beach are swimming and sunbathing. One can simply spend hours relaxing under the shade of a tree or reading a book amidst extreme tranquillity.

2. Red Palm Oil Plantation

A major economic activity on Little Andaman is the production of Red Palm Oil which sustains the livelihood of its inhabitants. From farm to table, one can witness the whole process of extracting red palm oil which is used in cooking and personal care products. Unlike refined palm oil, which is unhealthy, red palm oil is full of antioxidants and has various health benefits.

3. Whisper Wave Waterfall

Where to Eat in Little Andaman?

One has to manage their expectations when it comes to food in Little Andaman. There are no fancy restaurant chains or aesthetic cafes. What one gets is canteens and local dhabas that serve freshly cooked meals. Although you will find places (small eateries) selling chai, pakoras, etc.

Since the island is remote and the eateries may not have all the ingredients with them, it’s better to inform them beforehand. The restaurant people can arrange ingredients and cook you a meal of your choice. Most eateries serve the freshest catch of the day with rice, some veggies, or lentils.

  • Mobile Networks: Only BSNL and Airtel network are available for call and text messages.
  • Internet Connection: The intent is not widely available in Little Andaman. Few commercial outlets may have broadband connection which has a wonky connectivity.
